How to Buy a Used Printer
Printers are pricey. Choosing a new printer can often be too expensive for many buyers whether the equipment is for everyday printing or for something special. Because printing does cost so much for many people, a used printer can be a better option.
So, how do you buy a used printer? The buying guide below provides the information you need to choose and purchase the right printer for you.
Refurbished or Used Printer?
To begin with, terminology is important when buying used printers. There are two different terms that the buyer must understand: refurbished and used. A refurbished printer is one that was not working at some point. It may have become damaged or it may have simply malfunctioned for some reason. Either way, a refurbished printer was repaired by experts to a fully functional state. A used printer, on the other hand, was previously owned and has mileage on it, since it was used for a while by someone else. Some people shy away from refurbished printers, just as they would shy away from a car that was totaled and then repaired. Others prefer to avoid the used printer. Buyers must decide whether the used printer or the refurbished printer is the best option for them.
Types of Printers
When shopping for a used printer, it quickly becomes evident that there are several different types from which to choose. Each type requires its own ink or toner, paper, and connection. Different printers have different strengths and weaknesses, as well. For example, laser printers are fast, but may not be the best for pictures. Inkjet printers use a great deal of ink, but they print much better pictures, since they can print directly onto printer paper. Buyers should understand the different types in order to make the best choice of printer.
Laser
The laser printer is a good choice for people who must print a lot of copies in a short time. Laser printers are often chosen for office or business use.
When choosing a laser printer, there are a few things to consider to make the right decision. For example, if the printer will be used in the office, does it offer any type of wireless, wired, or bluetooth networking? Also, does it print only in black and white, or does it print in color, as well. Also, consider whether the model is known for problems (e.g. paper jams).
Inkjet
One of the most common types of used printer is the inkjet printer. Inkjets print in black-and-white or color, and are very versatile; they can print on standard paper, card stock, and even photo paper.
Buyers should find out several things before buying. For example, ask what type of ink the printer uses. Determine if the printer’s ink cartridges are still being manufactured, since they will be harder and more expensive to replace if they are not widely available. Print speed is also important, as well as whether the printer uses two ink cartridges or multiples. And lastly, make certain the printer prints in color and not just black and white.
Dot Matrix
If the buyer is seeking a very old model, then the dot matrix printer is an option. Often referred to as the dinosaur of printing, the dot matrix printer uses a very specific paper. The paper is perforated and comes on a roll that includes strips on the sides with holes in it. The printer uses the holes to feed the paper through, and it prints using a toner cartridge. When choosing a used dot matrix printer, buyers must keep in mind that it prints only in black-and-white, and it is very slow in comparison to newer models.
Considering Features
Depending on the age of the printer, it may offer a number of options. Such options can affect how the printer is used and what area it is used in. These include network capability, and whether the printer comes with the right connection types. Also consider if the printer is an all-in-one model. If so, find out what other features it offers.
Compatibility is Important in the Used Printer
There is one extremely important thing to consider when choosing a used printer. It is absolutely vital that the printer be compatible with the computers it will connect to. Some very old printers may not work with newer operating systems. Some operating systems have more trouble connecting with various types of printers. There may be drivers available that can update the system and allow it to work. Then again, there may not be. Buyers must determine if the printer will work with their computer. If you fail to do this, you may end up buying a used printer that is useless to you.
Printer Accessories
Buyers should remember that a used printer may or may not come with the components (e.g. cables, cords, ink, etc.) needed for use with their computer equipment. Make sure you know which components are included and which components are required. If the printer you choose does not come with the required accessories, make sure those accessories are available for purchase.
Cords and Cables
Not even brand new printers come with connector cords and cables. Generally, aside from the power cord, these must be bought separately. This is also the case with used printers. Buyers must determine which cords and cables are not included, and then must determine if the cords are available. Not all older cords are easy to find.
Ink
If the used printer is an inkjet model, then it will need ink cartridges. Before purchasing a printer, buyers should make sure that the required ink cartridges are available for purchase. In addition, some printers use different numbers of cartridges, so the buyer should know how many are required before purchasing.
Other Accessories
Depending on the printer, other accessories may be necessary, as well. For example, some inkjet and laser printers include a toner waste receptacle. This needs to be replaced about as often as the ink needs replacing. Other possible components include a telephone cord (for printer/fax machines), a stand for larger, heavier printers, and specialty paper (especially for dot matrix printers).
